Premium
What you pay every month regardless of whether you use healthcare. Think of it like rent for your insurance.
Deductible
What you pay out of pocket before insurance kicks in. A $3,000 deductible means you pay the first $3,000 of care each year.
Out-of-pocket max
The most you'll ever pay in a year. Once you hit this, insurance covers 100% for the rest of the year.
Copay
A flat fee you pay per visit ($25 to see your doctor). Applies after or sometimes before your deductible.
Coinsurance
After your deductible, you split costs with insurance. 20% coinsurance means you pay 20%, they pay 80%.
HSA
Health Savings Account — only available with HDHPs. Pre-tax money you save for healthcare costs. Rolls over forever, never expires.
